The Last Days Of Polaroid - - The Beginning of the End

No more hysteria. No more signing “Save Polaroid” petitions. No more whining!Ladies and Gentlemen, we need to face the facts, the inevitable. This is the end of times for our beloved Polaroid film. What I will be doing with this blog is simple. I will be sharing the last Polaroids that I will ever take and present them in the fashion of a countdown to zero. Currently I have exactly 631 exposures left and after this initial post, I will number each Polaroid I add to this blog accordingly. I may acquire more film as I go, so the number may fluctuate a bit.Enjoy this last wave of Polaroid magic. Please feel free to comment freely. Cowabunga!

In early February (2008) I started seriously thinking about how I wanted to use the last of my film. Soon after, I went out and purchased a case of Spectra film (600 Exposures) from a local camera store–it was their entire stock and I felt the first pangs of desperation. As the reality of the end started to sink in, I began to think about the idea of Polaroids going to “waste”. I wouldn’t just shoot anybody because I had film in my camera. I had to love them. I had to admire them. They had to be special. I think everyone should be immortalized in some way, but my Polaroid lifeboat is not going to accommodate everyone. I have been a big fan of X (the best American band of all time) since I was a teenager…that’s over 20 years of lovin’. So when I realized that X frontman, John Doe was stopping in Baltimore as part of a solo tour he was doing, I got in touch with him and he graciously agreed to meet with me for a photo. After his soundcheck, we stepped outside the 8×10 Club in Federal Hill to take a few Polaroids. I said that I needed to find a good background and as I said that, some guy walks by us carrying this big roulette wheel-looking thing and John says, “What about that?” Perfect! I called the guy over and he held the wheel behind John for the photo. As we walked around the block his creative eye caught a window that had been broken and covered in masking tape. “How about this?” Again, perfect.I love the images I got, but have always preferred to shoot in a setting with more light. It was also cold out, so the colors are somewhat pink, but I did get my shot and was thrilled to meet this man whose music has heavily contributed to the soundtrack of my life.
